About yoga nidra
Yoga nidra is also known as non sleep deep rest (NSDR), a term coined by Andrew Huberman, a Stanford neuroscientist and creator of the Huberman Lab podcast. It's a combination of allowing your body to deeply rest, whilst keeping your mind alert, which induces deep relaxation on all levels of your being. I like to think of it as a kind of internal yoga which guides you into a state of complete stillness and clarity.
This simple, yet incredibly powerful practice has been proven to reduce stress, alleviate anxiety and help improve sleep. I guide using the method I learned from Ally Boothroyd's Transformational Sleep Yoga Nidra training.
I invite you to practice with headphones and lying on your back (but please modify if this isn't comfortable for you). I also suggest practicing in a quiet space where you won't be disturbed and carving out this time just for you.
You might imagine creating a little cocoon for yourself, where you can be warm, cosy and at ease.
Please also use any props you might need to be completely comfortable, including:
- a pillow underneath your head or knees
- an eye pillow or mask to cover your eyes
- a soft blanket to cover yourself
- warm, cosy socks
This yoga nidra can also be used as a morning meditation and for stress relief.
